The Civics Compact
Democracy depends on people who seek truth, understand their institutions, respect human dignity, and take part in public life with courage and care.
As members of a democratic community, we commit ourselves to these civic principles:

Learn how democracy works
We will understand our rights, duties, laws, and public institutions so we can take part with purpose.
Promise 3
Disagree without contempt
We will challenge ideas honestly while respecting the dignity and humanity of the people who hold them.
Promise 4
Protect equal rights
We will defend liberty, fairness, due process, and equal protection—even when doing so is difficult or unpopular.
Promise 5
Listen across differences
We will seek out experiences beyond our own and make room for voices that public life too often overlooks.
Promise 6
Use media with care
We will pause before sharing, identify sources, recognize manipulation, and separate evidence from opinion.
Promise 7
Reject political violence
We will pursue change through peaceful, lawful democratic action and reject threats or violence as tools of politics.
Promise 8
Serve the common good
We will turn civic knowledge into action by voting, volunteering, organizing, teaching, and caring for our communities.
We do not have to agree on every issue to share responsibility for our democracy.
The compact is nonpartisan. It asks for no party loyalty—only a commitment to informed, peaceful, and responsible civic life.
