Separation of Powers

(8th-grade reading level) How the U.S. Government Prevents Any One Group From Becoming Too Powerful

Overview

The Founders of the United States were very careful when they created the government. They wanted to make sure that no single person or group could get too much power. To do this, they used an idea called Separation of Powers.

How it works

Step 1

Congress passes a law (Legislative).

Step 2

The President vetoes it (Executive check on Legislative).

Step 3

Congress overrides the veto (Legislative check on Executive).

Step 4

The Supreme Court declares the law unconstitutional (Judicial check on Legislative/Executive).

Members of Congress may hesitate to challenge a President of their own party to avoid political backlash.
