Ryan Grim
Political reporter uncovering the inner workings of Congress, the progressive movement, and institutional power
Biography
Ryan Grim is an American author and journalist who co-founded Drop Site News in 2024 with Jeremy Scahill. He was previously D.C. Bureau Chief for The Intercept and Washington bureau chief for HuffPost, where he led a team that won a Pulitzer Prize.
Grim's reporting focuses on the inner workings of Congress, the progressive movement, money in politics, and the institutional forces that shape American policy. His work combines deep sourcing on Capitol Hill with a commitment to holding power accountable.
He is the author of three books. "The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution" (2023) is the definitive account of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the progressive insurgents who transformed the Democratic Party. "We've Got People: From Jesse Jackson to AOC, the End of Big Money and the Rise of a Movement" (2019) traces the arc of the progressive movement in American politics. "This Is Your Country on Drugs: The Secret History of Getting High in America" (2009) explores the untold history of drug use and the war on drugs.
In February 2025, Grim and Drop Site News broke the story that the U.S. State Department had allocated $400 million for "Armored Tesla" vehicles — a procurement document that raised serious questions about government contracting and conflicts of interest.
Grim has been a staff reporter for Politico and Washington City Paper. He was the regular Friday host of Rising and later co-hosted Counter Points on Breaking Points. He currently hosts the podcast Deconstructed.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from St. Mary's College of Maryland and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Maryland, College Park.
