The suit and tie, long regarded as the hallmark of professionalism and authority, can be critiqued as a farce for several reasons, especially when viewed through the lens of modern society and evolving cultural norms. It can give a veneer of credibility even to individuals and industries that are far from credible.

It can give the illusion legitimacy even within harmful organizations that are far from helpful to broader society. For example, tobacco executives, of competence.
