D. Micheal Quinn journeyed from California to Texas for his exams. (xiv)

Max Resche risked his life helping people escape Nazi Germany. His story is often untold. (3) Mormon scholars and amateur historians tread lightly on relationship between coreligionists and government of Nazi Germany. Reschke diverged from Church’s methodology for dealing with Hitler’s govt., but transgressed against 12th article of faith, and parts of section 134 of D&C. Reschke’s heroics lead this narrative not because he typified Mormons in Nazi Germany but instead because he differed so much from them. Many mormon officials tried to fit into the Third Reich by emphasizing points of congruence between their church and Hitler’s regime. – mandated by senior ecclesastical leaders and American Mormon mission presidents who acted under guidance from church headquarters in SLC.(4) Alfred C. Rees  an American mission leader cultivated contacts in Nazi’s propaganda ministry that allowed him to publish an article in the official Nazi daily newspaper. The article stressed points of congruence between Utah Mormon and German Nazi society. German Mormons dutifully served in Nazi labor corps and German military – assured by their church leaders that there was no conflict between being a good Mormon and a good citizen of the Nazi state. Missionaries did Nazi salute – in line advice from leaders and members wore brown shirts of Sturmabteilung – org. That bashed heads in the streets and vandalized Jewish businesses.. Other Mormons obtained membership in Hitler’s elite group of personal guards, the black-shirted Schutzstaffel.  (5)

Mormons leaders in Germany purged German-language hymnals of references of references to Zion and Israel.- German Mormon leaders refused to baptize prospective Jewish members. – in one case a congregation said goodbye to a convert from Judaism who, in the years before Hitler came to power had considered himself fully assimilated and acculturated into his new faith. (6) J. Reuben Clark ignored pleas of at least two German-speaking Mormons converts from Judaism for documentation that would hlp them leave prewar Nazi Germany. – he had a record of a long paper trail of anti-Semetic sentiments. German Mormons sent sons and husband to fight in military and prayed in church for a German victory.

Those at Mormon History Association claimed that it was unfortunate that Mormons had to collaborate to a measured extent with the Nazis, but such actions were probably necessary to save the church. (341) This presumption invites counterfactual reasoning. Evidence seems to argue against the notion that a lesser degree of accommodation would have hurt the church. Comparable sized new american religions avoided ingratiating themselves with nazis and they survived the war. 7th day adventists had fewer friends abroad and they did not pursue an aggressive policy to court favor with govt. Or the party. Christian scientists also survived. Even Jehovah’s Witness who suffered intense persecution have a strong membership presence in Germany today. -They lost ¼ of 20k German members to death. By 2009, they had 165,837 J.W in Germany.  Lds in contrast has 14k in Nazi Germany and 38,739 in Germany in 2013. .. No need to allow missionaries to train German olympians, dispatch a mission president’s wife to ride with Adolf Hitler and his Nazi women’s leader, or employ a bombastic mission president to seek an alliance with the Nazi propganda ministry… The path the mormons chose left a trail of both paper and memory. Pictures of Hitler-saluting basketball players, a Prophet of God seated before a large swastika, and articles that boasted about how Hitler has adopted the Sunday practice of Mormon fast. (343)  Mission President said “Heil Hitler” and attended a Nuremberg Nazi Party rally.
